You should delete the DOC-* files in etc. Do the same, except of  
DOC-23.0.50.1, also in the install area, i.e. /usr/local/share/emacs/ 
23.0.50/etc – only after you've installed the update. Otherwise GNU  
Emacs would complain about not finding its doc strings.

Never knew this would work! Except for the Mac OS X Cocoa/NeXTStep/ 
OPENSTEP variant Emacs.app ...

The change seems to be that most add-ons are now set to off (or no),  
i.e. you have to configure actively with --with-this --with-that -- 
with-something-else!
