I used RCS for a while until I understood the concepts, so I recommend
it.  I use SVN now, but that's for my projects, my single-file projects
(e.g. awk/sh scripts and some elisp) is still in RCS.  SVN can be
overkill for single files.  Besides, it still works ;)
