grep "Can't exec program"

grep "Can't exec program" |

When I try to run a grep on a large list of files, I sometimes get a
"Can't exec program" error. If I run the same grep command a
second later, it sometimes works. Any idea what is going on?
I'm using emacs 22.2.1 in Linux. I think this started happening
in emacs >=22, but I'm not sure.
