Giving up (on building emacs 23 on debian etch) The latest error I get is configure wants glib glib wants gtk and then apt bails out saying libgtk2.0-dev: Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (=2.8.20-7) but 2.10.13-2~bpo.1 is to be installed I suppose one could try to get around it but in my experience when pango gtk glib X etc start getting pulled in by dependencies it will break anyway later and is generally not worth it. So sticking with 22 (on debian etch) (Have an ubuntu hardy laptop where the story may be different. But doubt whether that too is worth the struggle)
