Hi,

with GNU Emacs 23.1.92.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.0) of 2010-02-19 
 on Suse10.3
behaviour is as you described at Solaris.

Have a look if/how  isearch related variables are customized or set local.
