not sure. Depends on how much elisp experience you have and what level
are you asking.

if you've written major modes, then you can probably get better
answers for that level at GNU emacs dev mailing list.

if you haven't written a major mode before, then i have some tutorial
on my site that might be helpful.

i haven't came across any tutorial that focus on writing a file
management mode, or any tutorial on a major mode that's not programing
language. Though, as you know there are quite a few special modes,
e.g. interface to irc, ftp, music player, video player, 2d arcade
games, shells... i never coded anything like this so i don't know the
answer.
