I gave Mew a good honest try, but when I sociably asked for help with
various more-or-less serious issues in this group, none was forthcoming,
so I crawled on back to Gnus.

I've since come to be pretty happy with it for mail; I'd already been
using it for a year or two to read news. And I only recently stumbled
across what's become Gnus's killer feature for me: automatic hiding of
excessive article quoting:

(setq gnus-treat-hide-citation t
      gnus-cited-lines-visible '(0 . 5))

These two little lines make reading Usenet vastly more enjoyable, since
the knowledge of how to trim one's followups has apparently become a
lost art.
