If I remove the "(desktop-read)" line above Emacs starts OK but, of
course, the desktop file is not read?

I neither use (desktop-load-default)

        desktop-load-default is a compiled Lisp function in `desktop.el'.

        (desktop-load-default)

        This function is obsolete since 22.1;
        use `desktop-save-mode' instead.

nor do I use (desktop-read)

        desktop-read is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `desktop.el'.

and my desktop gets saved and loaded.
