Gnus: Cyrillic in italics

Hello,

I have removed the default Emacs from Ubuntu and installed new CVS version. Works good, but for some reason the rendering of characters in Gnus has changed. All Latin letters look the same, but all Cyrillic glyphs are now drawn in italics, even though the same face is used. All Gnus and Emacs settings are the same as used in Ubuntu Emacs23.

What makes Gnus use italics in the new Emacs? What should I do to fix it?

New Emacs is configured to use xft and libotf:
What window system should Emacs use?                    x11
What toolkit should Emacs use?                          MOTIF
Where do we find X Windows header files?                Standard dirs
Where do we find X Windows libraries?                   Standard dirs
  Does Emacs use -lXaw3d?                                 no
  Does Emacs use -lXpm?                                   yes
  Does Emacs use -ljpeg?                                  yes
  Does Emacs use -ltiff?                                  yes
Does Emacs use a gif library?                           yes -lgif
  Does Emacs use -lpng?                                   yes
  Does Emacs use -lrsvg-2?                                yes
  Does Emacs use -lgpm?                                   no
  Does Emacs use -ldbus?                                  yes
  Does Emacs use -lgconf?                                 no
  Does Emacs use -lfreetype?                              yes
  Does Emacs use -lm17n-flt?                              yes
  Does Emacs use -lotf?                                   yes
  Does Emacs use -lxft?                                   yes
Does Emacs use toolkit scroll bars?                     yes

I tried using other toolkits, including GTK (which is used by Ubuntu Emacs), but nothing changed.

Below is the output of `describe-char' for the same Cyrillic letter `ж', taken in Org-mode, where it looks normal, and in Gnus, where it is drawn in italics:
