Why don't you try `M-x man' or `M-x woman' instead? I think man
doesn't work on shell mode because of a lack of an appropriate pager.
It might work with 'cat' or 'more' in shell mode.

M-x man is better, but you could set & export PAGER=cat in your
~/.emacs_SHELLNAME file (as I do).
