cua-paste: unexpected behaviour, C-v differs from Edit:Paste |

Hello,
I have observed a behaviour in CUA-mode which I find irritating (but I am open
to the fact that others might prefer this behaviour) and quite sure that I
could probably adjust it with a suitable setting in my .emacs files (if only I
knew the magic words).
My problem concerns C-v cua-paste and I was able to reproduce the following
observations on different X-servers and operating systems (e.g. Ubuntu 10.04
LTS, Emacs 23.1.50.1):
(1) Copy to clipboard from some application outside of Emacs (e.g. a terminal),
then C-v in Emacs (when no text selected): text is inserted as expected.
(2) Copy to clipboard from some application outside of Emacs, then C-v in Emacs
(while some text is selected): will replace selected text with content of
clipboard - as expected.
(3) Copy to clipboard from some application outside of Emacs, change to Emacs,
then select text, then click somewhere (selection is no longer highlighted),
then C-v in Emacs: text is inserted that was previously selected in Emacs - not
the text I previously copied to the system's clipboard.
(4) If I repeat (3) but use Paste from the Edit menu, I get my preferred
result: the text copied from the system's clipboard (and not whatever I had
previously selected and then unselected in Emacs).
At this stage I thought: fine, I just have to configure C-v to execute the same
command as Paste from the Edit menu. However, I meet the following difficulty
here: C-h k for both C-v and the Paste menu entry yield very similar
information - both are bound to cua-paste (although they behave in a subtly
different fashion).
Many thanks for any help with this.
Warm regards,
Stefan
