error: "Don't know how to make an localised variable an alias"

Hi,

after making obsolete variables in python-mode.el like this:

(define-obsolete-variable-alias 'py-python-command 'py-shell-name 
"version 6.0.4")

GNU Emacs 24.0.90.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) of 
2011-09-26

refuses to load it and sends the following error:

"Don't know how to make an localised variable an alias"

Doesn't happen with Emacs 23.3

Any idea what might be wrong, resp. what to change?
