Please describe how did you set up New Athena Unicode as the default
font.

In any case, this font causes some real trouble to Emacs. E.g., if I
select it via the Shift-F1 font selection dialog, typing "C-x 2" to
split the current window causes an immediate abort. I'm guessing that
some metrics in the font file are either incomplete or incorrect
(negative?). E.g., the smallest font height computed by Emacs for
this font is -5, which is obviously bogus. However, I don't know
enough about fonts to tell which metrics are wrong. Maybe someone
else can help.

Failing that, I suggest to talk to people who maintain this font and
tell them about your problem with Emacs. Maybe they will know which
metrics need to be fixed, or tell what Emacs does wrong with this
font.
