Multiple prompts when starting shell (local and remote)

Hello,

when starting a shell in Emacs 23.3.50.1 everything works fine for ssh-sessions
(local and remote via tramp), however, immediately after creating the shell
session the usual shell prompt is repeated 17 times - it does not generate 17
lines but the usual text specified in .bashrc in a row:

PS1=${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$)

It is a cosmetic problem, but somewhat annoying - how can I fix it?
Many thanks in advance!
Warm regards,
Stefan
