Thank you VERY much Xah Lee!
THere are SO many words that need to be spelled every day. For decades I have
been building my own word list to augment the totally inadequate "dictionary"
that came with ispell so long ago.
Some are specific- like friends' names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. All
such belong in personal wordlists.
But yesterday and today I got completely tied into a mental knot over the word
"surveillance". I actually opened the "spelling dictionary" in emacs. THere
were very few words in the original dictionary. "Surveillance" was not 0ne of
those words!
I tried looking it up on wictionary, but since I didn't know how to spell it
(duh!) wictionary told me there was no such word. It does not have the "do you
mean ..." feature that google has perfected. Today, (after some sleep) tried
wikipedia (which Does use the "do you mean..." function and I copied the word
from there (and learned to spell it in the ordeal).
THe entire process took over 90 minutes total and revealed to me how TERRIBLY
inadequate the spellchecker dictionaries are.
I expect to have to use my own (hardcopy, paper) medical dictionaries to
confirm spellings for most of the medical vocabulary words I use (before I add
them to my permanent list) - but "surveillance"? really?? -- well, it is used
in public health and epidemiology... but I associate it with governmental TLAs
and drones.
So thank you very much for the additional words.
I accept all of them gratefully.
Maybe if we all share our words, we can contribute a more robust dictionary to
the GNU project.
