Outgoing message address garbled

I'm running Debian squeeze with mutt and exim4.

Outgoing messages fail because outgoing address is garbled. For example:

  A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its


  recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    xetex.tug.org@historicalMaterialism.info
      Unrouteable address

Here the recipient's adress is prepended to my domain name.
