Sorry, I am confused. This is on the same machine, one command after the other. 
Why should these
two commands, which are supposed to be identical, use different variants of 
gnu-emacs?

OK - emacs-snapshot uses
- --with-x-toolkit=gtk3

while emacs 23.3 uses
- --with-x-toolkit=gtk

But how does this help? Where should I look? What gtk3 modules am I missing in 
my installation?
