Firefox and Chromium are doing the same as what Emacs 24 now does by default.
If you select something with the mouse, it becomes the primary selection.  If 
you press C-c, or select Copy from the menu, then it also gets put on the 
clipboard.

If you want to insert the primary selection into the URL bar or a text field on 
a form in Firefox or Chrome, you need to use the mouse.  If you use C-v, or 
Paste from the menu, then it will insert from the clipboard.
