It's not possible to have \234\456 – \456 is not possible in octal notation. 
The presence of pairs similar to those makes it likely that you have an UTF-8 
encoded text…

You can set in your environment the variables LANG or LC_CTYPE to point to an 
UTF-8 based encoding.
