Which clearly states that these shells you mention either get initialised as if 
they were interactive or login shells or read you hacked variables while the 
shell to spawn GNU Emacs is not of this kind.

Why is this so?

On Mac OS X the answers (or causes) are quite clear… (And once you know them 
you can circumvent them in each instance.)
