Emacs not finding all fonts on my system

Hi,

I have the font DejaVu Sans Mono installed on my CentOS box, and other
applications can find and use it.

However, when I start emacs (23.4), it doesn't understand this font. When I
look at all of the fonts, both through

(print (font-family-list)) and through M-x set-frame-font ?

it only shows a tiny fraction of the fonts installed on my system. How do I
make Emacs aware of the full set of fonts?
