The only mention of HTML in my Gnus configuration is:
(setq mm-text-html-renderer 'w3m)
So I guess it is possible what I see is not text, but
HTML, but run through w3m, just looks the same. But, I
tried to change to `shr', and everything (what I can
see) look the same. I don't know. But I'll examine the
variable you mention anyway.
