Why do you have to lower your security? Create an app specific password in google for gnus only (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en) , and save it in your encrypted ~/.authinfo.gpg. Keep two step verification for the rest (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/180744).
