In short: for a sufficiently recent Emacs, it Just Works :)
(I tested it on "my" Emacs, which is GNU Emacs 26.0.50 (build 1,
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.24.29) of 2017-07-25; I do
build from sources), and it actually works, on a plain Xterm.
I don't know at which version the patch got in, sorry.
