Problem using emacs package handler

Hi,

I am trying to download packages from elpa but fetching the package list
fails with "Regular expresson too big". I have tried to google around for
an answer without finding anything useful. This is a new installation, so I
have not previously succeeded in downloading any packages. See debug and
installation information below.
