I agree that the process should be made more flexible, and would be
happy to help work on a better solution that we can add to Gnus. That
would happen at my typical pace of code contribution, though, which is
best measured in months :)

Some might think Gnus is over-customizable, but some aspects of
customization, like posting styles, is both flexible and usable. It
would be nice to provide similar access for group article selection,
which is another core aspect of Gnus usage behavior.
