With the neat feature that you don't have to hammer in the hex code, but you can also start typing "smi" and TAB and you are offered all the codes whose Unicode name starts with SMI, from "SMILE" through "SMILING CAT FACE WITH HEART-SHAPED EYES" up to "SMIRKING FACE".

And if you use Helm, C-c h 8 (bound to `helm-ucs`) is like C-x 8 RET but

s/Helm/Helm or Ivy/

also shows the characters themselves, not just their unicode names (although it takes a while the first time it's invoked in a session as
it "collects" the characters...)
