Yes, I mean, I never did that (select and type) but
_if_ I did I would expect that to happen.

Because what else should happen and for what reason
do you select and type, if not to replace? If you
want to type at the beginning of the selection why
don't you just move point there and type, without
selecting anything to begin with?
