I think you can avoid using `setq' with lists, strings etc in
loops by using `cl-loop' with accumulation.

In the docstring, it says:

  [...]
  Accumulation clauses:
    collect/append/nconc/concat/vconcat/count/sum/maximize/minimize FORM
      [into VAR]

Try it :)
