You can use something like this if you don't want to separate thing manually:
(let* ((cmd "ls -l -a")
(cmd-list (split-string cmd " ")))
(apply 'ut-common-shell-command cmd-list))

Hmm I see the problem with redirection. Do you know any other standard
Emacs way to work with redirection? Maybe temp buffer?
