Ah-ha!  That's what I was missing.  I can't find this feature described
in the docstrings of the run-hook* functions or in add-hook's; have I
missed it?

I do find it mentioned in (info "(elisp) Running Hooks") though.  One
more coin for the "always read the info page" jar :)
