But for practical purposes Linux is Unix ...

And as an OS it is also Unix ...

And people refer to it as Unix often even casually, that term
includes all Unix in theory but in practice Linux and
the BSDs ... maybe some other?

So people us it like that already.

It just makes sense to them ;)
