There is also ~/.xsession or (more often) ~/.Xsession, and
even more possibly in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ ...

I wrote a post here about 10 years ago (?) about the
difference between the .Xresources and .Xsession files and how
they worked, if you can find that I'm sure I got it all
wrong :P
