backup file bang paths and fs basename limit

i use a common setting to make emacs backup files be bang paths.  this
is really convenient because it includes the whole path of the backup
file.

and i can do things like diff 2 versions, and so on.  and
backup-walker works with it.  so it is a really good setting.

however, if my path or basename is too long, it exceeds e.g. linux
ext4 255 char or so max basename length.  then i get errors when
saving etc.  in other words i am saying that
$emacsbackupdir/!path!to!dir!this-is-a-basename.org.~1323~ or whatever
gets too long on occasion.

is there a setting that can improve this?  idk, truncating or a hash
and a note with the full path, or putting into an fs hierarchy while
still allowing the above conveniences?  el.g. by making them still be
all in same dir but be all symlinks to the file which is in a
hierarchy?  etc.  idk just brainstorming.
