making on Compaq Alpha fails

Dear Sir/Madam

Whenever I try to "make" or (if that works (seldomly))
"make instal" on our newly upgraded Compaq True64 UNIX,
ver 5.1 Alpha server, it fails with messages concerning
this or that missing value or other, like:

mips-tfile, /tmp/cc4ZmLxu.s:8 Invalid .stabs/.stabn directive, value not
found
line: #.stabs "/usr/local/download/gnu/tar/tar-1.13/src/",100,0,0,$Ltext0

mips-tfile, /tmp/cc4ZmLxu.s:9 Invalid .stabs/.stabn directive, value not
found
line: #.stabs "arith.c",100,0,0,$Ltext0

mips-tfile, /tmp/cc4ZmLxu.s:263 Segmentation fault
line: #.stabs
"read_header:T476=eHEADER_STILL_UNREAD:0,HEADER_SUCCESS:1,HEADER_ZERO_BLOCK:
2,HEADER_END_OF_FILE:3,HEADER_FAILURE:4,;",128,0,0,0

*** Exit 1
Stop.
*** Exit 1
Stop.
*** Exit 1
Stop.

(making gnu tar 1.13 (the tar file were unpacked using gnu tar from
the older server)).

I assume that the errors are generated because I don't use gnu make,
because on a not yet upgraded similar Alpha system (ver 4.0f) the
"making" works if I use gnu make.

The problem is that I cannot "make" gnu make itself and thus I cannot
use it for subsequent makes.
I tried to copy the gnu make from the unupdated server, but that does
not work with the OS of this server:
../../make: Exec format error. Wrong Architecture.

The errors, when making make itself are also a mips-tfile errors.

Can you help me to get out of this dilemma?

Kind Regards
