Please help with binutils compilation

Hi,

Buried within the instructions of the binutils package is directions on what
to do if your computer system does not have 'ar' already.  When I try
running that script provided in the binutils/README for this type of
situation, I get the following error:

ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to ar
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [ar] Error 1

Anyone have any idea what this means?
