Try downloading the gnu tar source from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/tar/tar-1.14.tar.bz2
Unpack the source and look in the scripts/ directory.
I have no idea if those scripts do what you want, or if they even work
or do anything useful. I just noticed that they exist.
