The latest beta of GNU make 3.81 should work better. You can get it
from http://make.paulandlesley.org/make-3.81beta2.tar.bz2, or you can
get an even more recent version directly from CVS (you will need a
number of GNU auto-tools, etc. to build the CVS version).
