If you want to understand this, I suggest you study the same circuit
with a small resistance in series with the inductor.  For example, with
a 2 Ohm resistor in series, the dc component decays over the first 5 or
so cycles, after which the current behaves "normally."

Your confusion arises from the fact that no real inductor is ideal, so
the behaviour of an ideal inductor does not seem normal.
