I've had trouble getting backart and Slackware 9.1 to work.
Just in case anyone else is having trouble, here is what I
had to do:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain XWindowBufferUseXShm 'NO'
and now backart works fine. Without it I got errors such
as BadPixmap and BadShmSeg when I tried to start an app.
I hope this helps someone else.
