Make sure you're on sarge, or use the freetype library of sarge.
I do it like this: put
. /usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh 2> /dev/null
into /etc/profile or (for zsh, /etc/zsh/profile).

I'd recommend using Window Maker.
