Grub2 on USB-Stick fails install

Hi,

I'm trying to get my new USB-Stick bootable with grub2, as I did with my 
old one. But in between I upgraded my Ubuntu-Linux to 11.10 (dunno 
really if the script worked under 11.04 or 10.10 before).

However, this command fails:

grub-install --force --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/BeowulfOF/ /dev/sdc
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: Warnung: Es wird versucht, GRUB auf einer Platte mit 
mehreren Partitionsbezeichnungen oder sowohl Partitionsbezeichnungen als auch 
Dateisystemen zu installieren. Dies wird derzeit noch nicht unterstützt..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: Warnung: Einbettung ist nicht möglich. GRUB kann in 
dieser Konfiguration nur mittels Blocklisten installiert werden. Blocklisten 
sind allerdings UNZUVERLÄSSIG und deren Verwendung wird daher nicht empfohlen..

The error message says:"You are trying to install grub to a disk with 
several partitions... this is not supported till now" or something like 
that, second message is: "embedding not possible, grub may be installed 
only using blocklists..."

What version of grub2 do I need to get it back working? Why isn't it 
supported anymore to install onto a usb-drive?

Hope someone can help me, cause I don't really like using other 
bootloaders again.
