The heavy job is done after the kernel and initramfs have been loaded by GRUB, and does not use /boot.

Thanks for making me aware of this, Pascal. As a consequence, I asked Mr. Google "How does Linux system boot" and got some very informative explanations confirming what you say plus a lot of interesting details.
