actually i meant /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5. if i did not know that kernel info, i would not have realized grub does not try the kernel name on path "/boot". right now it will not boot hurd (reboots) or netBsd (netBsd cannot find root device, and i do not know if 2.02 is a.out or elf). after formatting, menu.lst use should be ok, but i am not until it all boots.
