I suggest using this :

HFILES = \
foo.h \
bar.h \
baz.h
PRODUCTION_LOCATION=/auto/include
diff: $(HFILES:%=%.diff)
%.diff: $(PRODUCTION_LOCATION)/%
-diff $< $(patsubst %.diff,%, $@)
################
Like this, make will run one target foreach diff, you'll see them one
by one.
I hope it helps.
PS: a .PHONY target may be used if needed.
