Sounds like make's jobserver lost one of the tokens or something. It's
hard to say.
What operating system are you using?

You should upgrade to the latest version, 3.81. There are a number of
known, fairly serious bugs in 3.80.
So far 3.81 (released over 3 months ago) seems to be much more stable.
