Screen buffering

Hi,
   When running an external command using "system", the screen output
seems to be buffered. Is it possible to switch this off? I can set
page_screen_output="false", but that switches off paging, not buffering,
and I still get all by external program output in one bunch instead of
as it is written. Is there a way?
