   I have been using Octave for a couple of years now, and I find it
   excellent. It has been running smooth until yesterday when I upgraded to
   Red Hat 6.0 (for i386).
   
   Now when I try to run octave the version-message comes up and the the
   program exits with the "segmentation-fault" message.

A similar  problem occurred with  the potato (unstable) version  of Debian.
It was recently corrected, so if  you want I can convert the debian package
to rpm and send it to you.  This is the comment in the Debian's changelog:

octave (2.0.14-1.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer release made in coordination with maintainer.
  * Recompiled against libstdc++2.9-glic2.1 -- This `fixes' the seg.fault
    bugs #35250, #34699, and #36076 reported against Octave, and reassigned
    to libc6. This should however be fixed in glibc-2.1 itself so that a
    glibc-2.0 compiled Octave will run under glibc-2.1.
