I'm seeing the same failure today.  

I checked the macports maillist and noticed a similar problem with emacs.

The fix mentioned resolves the problem with xemacs.  In the event there has 
been a fix pushed for ghostscript, try ...

        sudo port selfupdate
        sudo port upgrade outdated
        sudo port install octave-devel

I'm presently upgrading my outdated ports one at a time (others are failing as 
well).  When done I'll selfuppdate and upgrade again.  I'm not sure when I'll 
be done you may get a quicker resolution by  sending an email to the macports 
user maillist.
