GNU Plot package installation error

do you know why I keep getting this error when I try and install
gnuplot-4.6.0.tar.gz?
"package is missing file: COPYING
error: called from pkg>verify_directory (my home directory)
"
then a bunch of different errors from the pkg function...
any ideas?
